I'm also looking for an alternative after being forced to use the new beta, I hate the new layout, with context popups,  and because I'm not on XP/vista its not properly supported. Everything used to fit on one page but now it runs to two and it also runs  really slowly.

Try having a look at  www.netvibes.com, lots of the features and compact layout. You cad add in links to your yahoo email, facebook, BBC news feeds etc.
