Question:

What are some alternatives to boxing in my range hood duct work?

We are in the process of remodeling our kitchen and have installed our new OTR microwave/hood with new ductwork going to the roof. I like the look of the exposed ductwork above our cabinet, but the hole where it passes through the ceiling into the attic needs to be 'beautified'.

We used 7" round duct and the hole in the ceiling is approximately 1/8" to 1/4" larger (and not perfect). I incorrectly assumed that a flange similar to what covers where plumbing enters the wall existed for this - nope. So I was wondering if anyone else has any creative ideas.

Thanks in advance!

  1. I would try cutting a hole in a copper ceiling tile such as this http://www.americantinceilings.com/color...

  2. Go to your hardware store and ask for a storm collar. You will have to remove the pipe, slide the collar around it then reinstall pipe. Take the pipe with you to make sure a get a good fit. You may also want to paint the collar and pipe before re installation.
