Question:

What are some alternatives to recycling and/or throwing away wax paper?

I work at a wax paper factory. We make and convert wax paper. We throw away tons (and I mean tons) of scrap wax paper away every year because wax paper can not be recycled. Our scrap usually consists of trim, start up paper, paper out of customer specifications, or contaminated/dirty paper. What I am looking for is an alternative to throwing it away. For example, is there any place that will take wax paper and convert it into energy or a place that would have a use for it, so on? What are some suggestions?

  1. I know quilters who use wax paper for stencils, and crafty people who use it for stencil templates and such. You could check with local quilting/ and or fabric/craft stores, or possibly even elementary schools, who are always hard up for cheap art supplies. The amount you could give away would probably be small, relative to how much your company throws away, but every bit helps, right?

  2. It could actually be sold as recycled wax paper.  I know I buy toilet paper that is recycled, no, not used, it is stuff that was not good enough for the companies main rolls or it is the wrong size to fit on their rolls etc.  It is recycled in the factory they used to throw it away until they realized there are environmental nuts out there like me that will be happy to buy it.  You should really try to talk to someone high up in the company about how much money they can be making from this paper they are just throwing away.  I would use wax paper because it is safer than plastic wrap and I would not feel so bad if I know it is "recycled" wax paper.

  3. A biomass plant might take it off your hands, as i'm sure it has a pretty high energy content.  I don't know where you're located, so I can't suggest a specific one.

  4. People who make paper at home use wax paper.  They use the wax paper to help hold the shape of the pulp, while reducing the water content.  People also make ornaments out of the wax paper.  Other than that, I can't think of any way to recycle.  If you could remove the wax or plastic coating, then the paper could be recycled like other paper.  Good luck!
