  1. Scientists have been trying to find better alternatives for fossil fuels since a long time. However, some of the alternatives that can be used are biofuels (like biodiesel). Research is now focussing on tapping various forms of energy to create systems that can make use of energies from many sources therby improving reliability of the system. Some advanced technologies that are coming into picture for replacing fossil fuels are CAT - compressed air technology and ideas of cars run by fuel cells or electricity. However they are still under research to improve their efficiency and reliability.

  2. waste vegetable oils.I use it every day.

  3. If you don't mind converting food crops that would otherwise feed poor regions into biofuel stocks, then ethanol would work.

  4. it would be water burning you can get one for $1200 and it more than doubles your mileage. it was on the news here from Detroit. they tested an SUV that got 9 mpg and when they tested it after installing the container( they say is simple) it was getting something like 27 mpg.

WAY CHEAPER and no fumes and no recharging Just distilled water and you can google that and find out how to distill your own :)
