Staring a conversation can be hard for some people. I can be shy when I do not know people, but make an observation, question, or joke to start a converstion.

not akward a.k.a 'normal' - "So how is life treating you?/what are you doing with your life as of now?"

akward - hey what do you think of the expansion of the universe and how it all began.

pretty sure the opposite of awkward is comfortable.

and just try to be yourself when you start a conversation.. just talk about things you like.. or current events works for me. I suggest things that are going on in the world, or if you know the person you're talking to a bit well, then talk about something you know they like.
