What are some bad events that happened in the 1990's and 2000's that can be illustrated?

Bad events as in demonstrate humanity's faults, opposed to events that revolutionized society in a positive way. Also, something preferrably different from war.

I need to be able to illustrate them for a visual arts project.

An extreme amount of waste and litter in parks, on roads, etc.

Oil spills in the ocean.

The rising price of gas and the oil companies making billions of dollars in profits last year.

Homeless people

The most obvious is the events of 9/11/2001.  Also Cheating in baseball, the rising cost of fuel, Global Warming, rising teen pregnancy, kids killing kids, murder on campuses, world hunger.  I could go on, unfortunately.
