What are some basic first apartment essentials?

My boyfriend & I are getting our first apartment, a simple studio, and I was wondering what the basics we should get are?

A couch a bed dishes Ikea is super cool and cheap and they have storage fruniturepots and pans u need to eat

Renters insurance and a fire extinguisher.  The rest will all be unnecessary if you have a fire!

Kitchen supplies- Pots & pans, dshes, cooking utensils, silverware, plates, cup & glasses.

Cleaning supplies- chemicals and broom/dust pan

comfy ( used ) furniture, in case it doesn't work out.

Seperate clothes baskets

Extra towels and sheets.

Toilet paper, toothpaste, soap for each of you, shampoo too.

think about your lifestyle.  What you want to do in each space.  If you do not plan on having a sit down dinner with guests regularly, do not plan on a large dining area.  If you enjoy entertaining, ensure you have benches or furniture that will double as extra seating.

Will you have overnight guests?  If so a futon is always a good choice.

When you are laying out your space you can "define" spaces in open areas with area rugs.  Use an area rug to anchor your living area - sofa, coffee table, etc.

The most important thing is to find one thing you absolutely LOVE and work with it.  Pull colours from a fabulous sofa and match them to an area rug.  Then chose the coffee table (or a small upholstered bench instead of a coffee table) or end tables based on those colours and styles.

A small set of tools with a hammer and cordless drill.... Might not be exactly what you had in mind...But you'll thank me later.

get a few storage ottomans. nowadays they're very affordable because you don't have to get them in real leather
