  1. If you're discussing about the quality of teaching and assessment, then the following should be considered when a judging for a good lesson:

    - Pupils make good progress and show good attitudes to their work, as a result of effective teaching.

    - Planning for lessons is derived from longer term planning which demonstrates clearly how pupils are expected to progress in their knowledge, skills and understanding.

    - The teachers’ good subject knowledge lends confidence to their teaching styles and resources, which engage pupils and encourage them to work well independently.

    - Any unsatisfactory behaviour is managed effectively.

    - The level of challenge stretches without inhibiting.

    - Based upon accurate assessment that informs pupils how to improve, work is tailored to the range of pupils’ needs, so that all can succeed.

    - Teaching assistants and other classroom helpers, and resources, are well deployed to support learning.

    - Those with additional learning needs have work well matched to their needs based upon a good understanding and identification of them.

These are extracted from Ofsted's 'Criteria for making judgements about the quality of provision'.

  2. The teacher would be involved in some type of direct instruction--that could be small group or whole group.  All students would be on task.  But more than just on task, they should seem engaged.  That's harder to define.  Some students are just more quiet and serious, but there are times when you can tell that the kids aren't just working, but that the really care.  They seem contented to be working.  They are asking good questions and helping each other. There would be evidence throughout the room of the type of things the students are working on.  It would be apparent that the teacher has control of the situation without having to be heavy handed.

  3. Well it depends exactly what they are doing in the classroom. An example of a good classroom could be all students are sitting silently on  rug while a teacher is reading a book about Asia.

-The teacher should be aware of what is going on

-Should be engaged with the students

-The students should be listening and paying attention

-Students should be doing there work or taking notes.

  4. I think behaviors you would notice in a good classroom would be synergy. Everyone has clear expectations about what they should be doing at every different point in the day whether it be working on bell work as soon as they come in first thing in the morning to how they are suppose to line up for lunch. No one looks confused about what they should be doing at any given moment. Procedures have been practiced since day one. Misbehavior would be minimal because students have clear guidelines about behavior and concequences.

A wise teacher would have specific tasks assigned to students (passing papers, changing schedule board, erasing the board) so they are less tied up in menial tasks and more available to individual students for support.

There would be a clear daily schedule posted and activities would change about every 40 minutes. Transitions would be smooth with very little time wasted. The teacher would have direct instruction mixed with individual and group activities. Depending on specific student needs you would observe a different classroom schedule and structure. For instance an autism classroom would mix physical activities before any activity that requires concentration.
