I'm 12 years old, and am looking for a bird that I can take care of myself, and that is less that $50. I have 2 cats and a dog, and i would keep the birds in my room in order to keep them away from my other pets. i also would like a bird that will live at least 5 years or more. Also, are there any trainable birds in my price range? please give me basic information on each breed you recomend. thanks a ton!

  1. At the under $50 range your options are basically budgies, doves and some species of finches.  Since you don't wan't a budgie/parakeet and you want a bird that can be trained (which rules out finches)  then then the only real option is a dove.  While they will not talk or do tricks they can be hand trained and be quite affectionate.  Any bird properly cared for should live at least 5 yrs

  2. Any kind of pet bird, properly cared for, will live longer than 6 years (which is about the amount of time you are likely to continue living with your parents).  It really wouldn't be fair for you to get a bird if you cannot promise it a life time home.  I realize for you this may seem like forever, but you will be moving out and having to figure out what to do with your bird before you know it.  Birds are also very demanding, and often fragile pets, and it is a very bad idea to bring one into a family in which not everyone is on board with getting one.  You also will not be able to find a tame (I assume this is what you mean by trainable) bird for under $50 anywhere, and if your funds are that limited, you will not be able to provide adequate veterinary care.  You can get inexpensive budgies at pet stores, but these are not hand raised and are difficult, if not impossible to tame.  It is kinder at any rate to keep such non-tame birds in pairs.  If your parents do not want a pet bird as a member of the family, you should probably stick with some other sort of pet for now.

**In response to your added details**

In that case, a cockatiel might be good.  Unless you could find a resue (check with local stores that sell birds or bird supplies for this), these cost about $120.  I wouldn't reccomend a rescue if it's your first bird (usually these become ruscues because of behavioral or health problems).  You also shouldn't go to a pet store, even if they advertise that their birds are 'hand raised'.  These birds often come from 'chick mills' (similar to puppy mills) and have not been treated properly, physically or psychologically.  For any kind of bird, you should go directly to a private breeder, even if the price is a bit more.  If your parents really do want a bird, perhaps they would be willing to go halfsies?

  3. the best bird you can get for under 50 dollars and trainable would have to be the budgie.

it is trainable and is mostly quiet, birds make noise. at my pet store they are about 19$ but i highly recommend a hand fed budgie from a rescue shelter or breeder.

there are some other birds like canary's and finches but are cage birds, and are  basically not trainable.

please do plenty of research and be prepared(birds can be a lot of work but are very rewarding).

since you don't want a budgie i highly suggest a green cheek conure. their most of the time very quiet and can be great apartment birds. their very play full and very cuddly. i can give you some great info. on them to! same thing(get them from a breeder or rescue shelter!)

feel free to email me at niloc505@gmail.com if you have anymore questions, need info. or need advice.

  4. If I were you I would save up $65 to $70 dollars and get a cockatiel, they live close to 20 years if taken proper care of, but need lots of attention because they can get lonely and result in feather picking otherwise, but you still have to realize that you still need a good sized cage, the food, the treats, the toys, and the time to take care of a bird.

  5. Yes, a parakeet. They cost 20-30 dollars. They live about 20 years. http://www.lisashea.com/petinfo/budgie.h... check this out. It helped me out when i got my not so tame parakeet. But she is now a perfect and tame animal.

  6. pudgies are good. also some finches are cheap. if u keep the other pets separated it wouldnt be a problem my cats and dogs never did much to them

  7. A budgie/parakeet is probably exactly what you're looking for. WIth cage, food, toys, and bird however, it'll probably cost you closer to 60$.

  8. I think you might be able to find a lovebird for that price. I find that many people are giving away their lovely handfed lovebirds for only the price of the cage. Though lovebirds don't talk, they love to cuddle and there are many colour mutations out there. Simply wait until one of these cuties becomes available, then jump at the chance. Remember, these bird live about 15 years, so they are a long term commitment. In the time you are waiting, do research on diet, tricks you can teach it, and toys.

  9. Budgies are wonderful pets if you keep their wings clipped nicely (don't worry, it doesn't hurt the bird at all!).

    Read these:

They are great personalities, and will always love being with you!

Remember to do as much research as possible before buying your bird! It should never be an impulse buy.

Birds are truly wonderful pets, but require a lot of care and attention, so read up on them and think about it. Good Luck!  ^_~

  10. Parakeets

  11. the birds they sell at KFC. Only joking . I think some parakeets finches and a few doves

Dove can be trained to fly in circles when released  finches just fly away parakeets just sit on your finger and fly around

  12. I had budgies, they can be trained to sit on your finger and stuff. I never got mine to say any wornds or anything ( I Have heard they can I dont know though) But I had one that would mimic our phone ring, it was pretty cool. The pet store ones are usually skittish though, try and find someone who has babies, and has had lost of contact with them. Mine were all from pet stores, 2 of them were really nicea nd easy to train and my other 2 were mean and bit and never got any training.
