  1. You might enjoy 'Sorcery and Cecelia' by Patricia C. Wrede and Caroline Stevermer.  It is set in a kind of alternative Regency England, in which magic is a part of everyday life, and lots of people have magical ability.  The novel is told in the form of letters between the two heroines, and it has magic, imagination, humour and romance.  If you like it, there are two sequels.

Although it is not set in olden times, but in present-day America, you might enjoy 'Temping Fate' by Esther Friesner, which is about a high school girl who takes a summer job with a very unusual temping agency, and finds herself working for the Three Fates from Greek mythology. She encounters other mythological characters in the course of the book.  It is very funny and has lots of magic and a dash of romance.

You might also enjoy Terry Pratchett's trilogy about Tiffany Aichling, the trainee witch, they are The Wee Free Men, A Hatful of Sky, and Wintersmith.
