  1. There are several of the smaller breeds that are considered hypoallergenic.  Because they don't shed or don't shed much they are said to be less likely to cause allergies.  Breeds like Schnauzer, poodle.  Both make GREAT first time pets.  You just have to keep them groomed.  Brush them daily to keep down mats.

  2. There are a lot of things you should consider when choosing a breed:

    Is shedding a problem?

How much time can you devote to training?

How much exercise can you give a dog?

    How big is too big?

What do you want from the dog? (a running partner, a trick preformer, a cuddler, etc.)

Goldens and Labs are ideal first dogs, there is a reason they are so popular. They are easy to train and loving. However, they do shed and might be bigger than you are looking for.

On the small side, I suggest a dachshund. They are intellegent, hardy (for their size) and good for almost any lifestyle unless you are a distance runner. They come in 3 different coat varieties: long, smooth and wire haired.

If you want more of a snuggly dog, a cavalier king charles spaniel is awesome. They are great companions, playful, snuggly and just all around great dogs. Be careful when you buy one and get one from parents that have been heart tested, as that is a breed concern.

Pugs are also pretty simple dogs. They are playful and happy but they shed constantly.

If you answer the first set of questions, I can probably come up with more ideas. I've helped many people choose dog breeds to fit their lifestyle.

  3. You prefer smaller dogs? Well, a min pin is a good choice for a fist timer. It's rather self reliant, and still playful. Not to mention very very cute. But, they don't like to litsen all the time.

  4. Go to www.petfinders.com

You can type in all the things your looking for..Big dog, small dog shed less etc..

What kind of home your in and your activity level and things you are willing to do.

They compute it and come out with a list of dogs that would suit your specifications!

  5. Check with the Animal Shelter they have all kinds, they have had their shots and have been spayed.  You will have to pay an adoption fee. ASPC also does an evaluation on each dog so you can read about how each dog acts.  Make sure you get a dog that fits your lifestyle and is well socialized. You can also check the newspapers. Sometimes you will find good dogs in the free adds. The owners had to move, or had died etc.

  6. The best thing is to go to your local shelter and see what they have available.  You will save a life and have a dog that worships you.
