  1. Administrative jobs, pretty much.  If you want to work directly for the insurance company (instead of an agent) and you like math, you could be an actuarial.

  2. An insurance company needs a lot more than just people selling insurances. This really depends on background (if you're checking career opportunities, you should add your education to your question) and interests.

A friend of me is very good with figures and has basically no education except secondary school. She does the "quoting" for an insurance broker: calculating policy rates and the like.

People with an economic or accounting background/knowledge are needed for the bookkeeping, checking financial status, executing payments, checking and improving the rating of the insurer or seeking reinsurance (insurers need an insurance too, you know).

With legal background or knowledge you can draw up the policies for insurance companies.

Then there is the commercial aspect: more than just selling insurance, also advertising, publishing, arranging conferences, ...

Insurers also require a lot of claims adjusters (often companies hired by the insurers). These are the people who study the individual cases after there has been an accident. Especially people with a legal training are required here, but they will usually hire anyone with some motivation for the job.

Any large insurance company will also have an "intelligence service", dedicated to training their insured in order to avoid risks, managing databases of incidents, identifying possible risk around he globe or just keeping up with what the other insurers are offering. This department is usually filled with people who did claims before, as they have a lot of experience.

Similar, there are the surveyors (again, often third companies): experts who do on-site visits of clients or accident locations. A technical background may help here, although also financial and legal experts exist.

Finally, there is the pure secretarial work.

Basically, if you want a career in insurance, like to examine facts to the smallest detail and don't care at all about the policy/commercial aspect, claims adjuster is the safest bet.

If you love math, a job at the financial department might be better suited.

  4. My daughter works at Blue Cross/Blue Shield.  She has absolutely nothing to do with the selling of insurance.

  5. Customer service, underwriting, scheduling, actuary, payment processing, advertising and marketing, analysis, office management, cancellations and reviews...
