Question:

What are some causes for cat's hair loss?

The hair on my Siamese girl's tummy is getting thin. It started from the bottom, toward her rear end. Now it has gotten worse, now upward to the middle of her tummy. Could it just be old age, similar to humans balding? Or other factors? I noticed this pattern of hair thinning ever since I adopted a stray cat. Could it be a form of anxiety from having another cat in the house?

  1. Does she groom more than usual on her belly?  If so, this over-grooming usually causes hair loss and can be parasite, allergy or stress related.  Was the stray cat been vet checked and treated for fleas?   Since you have noticed the hair loss correlates with the new cat, and if there is not a flea problem, it sounds like a stress reaction.

If she has groomed herself bald in places, it is called psychogenic alopecia or fur mowing. I have attached a couple of links for you with more information.

To ease your worries, if she hasn't had a wellness check in a while, it might be a good idea to schedule one.

To help kitty adjust to the new kitty, try giving the first kitty as much or more attention as the new kitty. Play with her alone and give her some catnip or a kitty treat.

Other things to try are the Bach Flower Essences or the pheromone Feliway. I have not used the Feliway, but from reading about it, it appears to be a good product.

I can attest to the Bach Flower Essences Rescue Remedy. I got a small bottle of it to try with my oldest kitty when she was ill with kidney failure. I had done extensive reading about it first and even bought the book describing how the essences work with pets. I truly believe it helped calm her. A rescue sanctuary I donate to also uses the Rescue Remedy for their new arrivals to help them ease into and adjust to their new surroundings. The wonderful thing about the flower essences, it is natural and will have a positive effect or no effect at all..it will do no harm.

    Purrs to you and kitties

  2. Might be because of the heat my cats fur is because of that!!

  3. Your cat could have an allergy to something like its food, or even a thyroid problem, does your cat have other symptoms other than hair loss? Maybe its time to at least consult a vet.

  4. Well pay attention to your cat because I have a friend whos cat eats his fur. And he is losing it towards the back of his body too.
