  1. try this web site all the best to find a flat

  2. Go look at innercity (western suburbs) such as Yarraville, Ascot Vale, Kensington, Coburg, Abbotsford. These suburbs are within 3km - 7km being the furthest 9km (coburg) and generally have reliable public transport directly to the heart of melbourne city (both trains and trams). They also have reliable eateries and cafes so you'll have a great lifestyle and have direct access to the city.

Suburbs further out (i.e. 7-9km) such as fairfield and alphington is definetely worth checking out as they also have direct train access to the city.

Occassionally, you might find an odd one or two bargains at a pricier suburbs such as clifton hill, northcote, hawthorn or camberwell.

Avoid bay suburbs such as middle park or st kilda or any other areas such south yarra as they are very pricey!

    Go to www.realestate.com.au or www.realestateview.com.au

    Hope this helps :-)
