What are some cheaper and/or creative alternatives to putting up a fence in a yard?

Obviously, tall hedges are an option. Is there anything else? Our neighbors have a fence that is really unattractive, plus it was not done correctly (posts are uneven for one thing). So, we don't want to put up the same fencing, but our yard needs some privacy.

  1. Hedges are a good bet.  Privet is very fast growing and grows 10-15' but requires a lot of trimming.  Arborvitae will grow tall, but not very quickly.  Boxwood will grow slowly and 3-4'.  Rose of Sharon is pretty, grows 10' or so but grows slowly.  Barberry will grow to about 4-5' and comes in lime green and burgundy.  It also has nasty thorns!  All of these plants are fairly inexpensive, especially if you buy them small.  Also, autumn is a perfect time to plant hedges, as the soil is warm and allows the roots to grow and establish before winter.  Garden centers also have great sales this time of year.  Be sure to water, water, water, even on semi-warm winter days.  The first year of watering is the most crucial.  Hope this gives you a few options.  Good luck!

  2. Bamboo, if you have the right climate. Be sure that is what you want, they are hardy, fast growing and become very tall fast. They make a beautiful noise when the wind sways.
