  1. The very first atmosphere on Earth is made of hydrogen.  That quickly escaped into space.  Then Earth had a carbon dioxide and nitrogen atmosphere, till life developed and formed a nitrogen-oxygen atmosphere.  In short, Earth had three atmospheres in its history.

    the biggest difference is free oxygen.

    in addition, depending on the temperature there's liquid water.

    really early it was too hot for that.

    and when it did cool some, there was not nearly as much water.

    so oxygen, and beautiful blue oceans.
