  1. The closest city would be Valladolid. Though it's more like a city/town, it's not that big. It's inland on the way to Merida. (The same way you would travel to Chichen Itza)

If you are looking for churches and colonial bulidings I would think this would be the closest place to see them.

If you are looking for cool tourstist places then the stuff along the coast that others have mentioned would be better.

The closest large city would be Merida, (approx. 1 million people) about 4 hours west.

  2. Check out 5th ave in Playa Del Carmen.  12 blocks of shopping.  Markets, vendors etc.  About 45 min drive.

  3. Take a boat over to Isla Mejeres.  Ok, I butchered the spelling but it's Isle of Women (Ladies). Very quaint, colorful, little town with tons of shopping and food. In fact, on my next trip I will stay there instead of Cancun.

  4. Go see the Mayan ruins in Xcaret.  Its a long bumpy ride thru some impoverished areas but I felt it was worth the day.  We did some repelling and zipline.  Swam in underground water aquifers.  Very cool.

  5. Riviera Maya Towns

    Akumal

    Cozumel

    Isla Holbox

    Mahahual

    Playa del Carmen, Playacar

    Puerto Aventuras

    Puerto Morelos

    Soliman Bay & Tankah Bay

    Tulum

    Xcalak

You can also take the ferry from Playa del Carmen to Cozumel.

See the ruins of Chichen Itza, Coba and Tulum.

    Snokle at Xelha.

    And visit Xcaret.

  6. no cities around cancun, but some really cool towns

  7. Hello,

    Welcome to Cancun

I recomend you take the eco-tour uchben beel ,

there you can visit part of the peninsula of yucatan an know a mayan Route, mayan towns.

    www.mayanbeel.com

  8. It all depends on how far you wish to travel to get to another City, although the closest places are towns.

There is a good Coach service by ADO or ADO GL, you can find timings and prices on here. (prices are in pesos) www.ticketbus.com.mx that are very reasonable and comfortable in order to get around, although when heading south they stop at Playa del Carmen, Tulum & Chetumal, and so if you needed to visit one of the other places you'd probably be better to jump on a Mayab. Cost from Cancun to Chetumal is $25.00 USD and takes 5 or 6 hours depending on the number of stops.

If you fancy going across to Merida instead, well that takes about 4 hours from Cancun, but is well worth a visit, as it has plenty of the old colonial style buildings and churches. While you are out that way, you should make a point of visiting some of the Mayan Ruins like Chichen Itza.

Playa del Carmen is very much quieter than Cancun, and attracts more European visitors than Cancun, which is very americanised. Tulum which is further south again, is an Eco friendly area, with many places only having electricity during the night for charging telephones & cameras. It's a great place to experience the Sea Turtles coming ashore to lay their eggs between May & August. The beach is fantastic, white sand and goes on for ever. Also close by is Tulum Mayan Ruins, right on the Coast which is definately worthy of a visit, and only takes about an hour to walk around.

Two other places that shouldn't be missed are Xcaret and Xel-Ha (although personally I prefer Xcaret because of the Show that they put on at night).

    Hope this helps.

  9. Cancun is a tourist vaction spot. They might have more info at there website.
