Are there many jobs for professional divers/scuba divers in the civilian market? I know there are rescue divers, but can one do it for a living or is it more of a recreational activity?

  1. If you have a divemaster cert... you could work at an aquarium that has dive programs and supervise guest divers and make sure they aren't having heart attacks, etc. lol. They actually have an amazing such program at Disney's The Seas at Epcot Center in Orlando, FL. Check it out.. it would be an AMAZING job. I know there are other places like that too.

Another option.. you could get your teaching cert. and teach. The beauty about this option is you can do it in some beautiful location abroad. I got certified in Thailand.. and all the dive instructors were ex chemists, pharmacists, and professionals who gave up their hectic lives in the West for a less stressful existence in paradise. You won't get paid lots by US standards.. but you'll make more than enough to get by in that particular location.

Good luck! Don't let anyone tell you that you CAN'T!!!

  2. Depending on what certification you already have you could get certified to be a dive instructor and teach scuba to other people.  It isn't probably the most 'advanced' job you could have and might not pay all that much (depending on location), but it would be a blast!  To tell you the truth, if I ever move somewhere warm where people dive all year, that is totally what I want to do.

  3. yeah, you can do it for a living.  There's working on oil rigs, salvage, photography/videography, retrieving golf balls from water hazards, and placing buoys to name a few.

All of this requires some technical training, and there are better paying jobs out there, but it is a living.
