What are some comparisons and contrasts of Europe in the 400s and 1800s. (I can only think of one for each.)?

Its for an essay and I cannot think of any for the comparison except farming which is stupid.

Europe in the four hundreds was at the beginning of an extended dark age abrogated by the all powerful influences and mandates of the Christian Church.

By the eighteen hundreds, science and reason had usurped that power and influence of the Church to the point that innovation and creativity could blossom in all fields of endeavor, even those which undermined the religious fundamentalism which had reigned for hundreds of years.
