What are some cool bars/places to see bands around San Francisco State University?

There are no places "around" SFSU to see bands (it's mostly a residential area) but you have bars all around San Francisco. One I used to visit quite frequently was the Elbo Room.

Not knowing what type of music you're into you might also look at the SF Station website and the websites for the the local free papers SF Weekly and SF Bay Guardian. They list a lot of the bands that are playing around SF and the rest of the Bay Area.
