I'm staying there for a week in August. I've already checked out snorkling, zip line jungle tour, bull fights, and evertyhing you can find on the regular tourist internet site. I'm looking for other stuff like good place to hang out at night, places to eat, stuff that I don't need to make reservations for. Anyone had a good experience there before?

  1. Xcaret is interesting for a day. Rent a car and drive to Tulum, about 1/2 an hour, for  calm, less touistic beaches. Have lunch at Maya.

  2. Try walking down 5th Avenue and do some shopping and check out some really good restaurants.  Try visiting the Blue Parrot, 12th Street North and 1st Avenue North | In the Blue Parrot Hotel, Playa del Carmen 77710, Mexico

    Tel: 800-387-6230

    URL: www.blueparrot.com

Or Las Brisas on the corner of 10th Avenue and Calle 4 is a great place for seafood.  Average about $7.00 US for fish of the day with vegetables, etc.

Also, a good place for beef in Playa is HC Monterrey on Calle 1 Sur between 15th Avenue and 20th Avenue.  They are a hole in the wall restaurant but for $8.00 US you can have "arrachera nacional" steak, baked potato, 1/2 avocado, hot sauce, tortillas and a soft drink.

Enjoy the beaches, and try some tours.

    =)

  3. there are some great bars that I can remember...Capitan Tutix and the one next door is cute that has the swings instead of bar stools. The entire town is really nice and there are so many places to eat/drink. Other than that, you should definitely check out Xcaret, it's beautiful. I went once a few years ago to PDC and I'm going again in September! Where are you staying???

  4. I would stay away from the senior frogs down by the ferry dock. It's way over priced. Along fifth ave. there's lots of good choices. I don't remember the names of most of the restaurants  (sorry). I can't think of any that would require reservations.

Most of the times I've been in that area though it's been at all-inclusive so my main experience with restaurants would be just getting a couple of drinks and maybe an appetizer to break up my wife's shopping trips.

We always liked the Margaritas at La Parilla (again on 5th), it's a chain restaurant but it's sometimes hard to figure that out because apart from the name and the red bull on the logo there seems to be a vast difference between each location. But certainly the last few times we have been there the Margaritas have been great.

If you just walk down 5th ave. the restaurants will have menus posted, dishes on display or more often then not someone there to tell you about the menu/specials and try to convince you to eat in their restaurant.

Go see some ruins in the area, there are lots of packaged tours to ruins or if you and not afraid to drive (and you shouldn't be if you come from a big city) you might consider renting a car to get to some ruins. It's cheaper than the tours if you can split the cost of the car rental and the guide at the site between 2 or 3 other people. If it's just you by yourself then the tours are the better way to go.

    Enjoy - it's a great area.

  5. If you are a couple, you can get a day pass to Desire Resort. They have a disco and a nude rooftop hot tub. It gets pretty wild up there at night, but it is a couples only resort.
