What are some creative ways to make your office more green?

My company moved to new offices at the end of last year and we are now looking at implementing some changes in the way we do things so that we can be more environmentally friendly.

We want to not just make our office 'greener', but helpto make the environment around the office 'greener'.

While we are in the city, the office is situated on the harbour, so we would like to consider our impact on the surrounding water.

  2. Recycle, Reduce, Reuse...DUH

  3. Try going into a hardware shop and buying some green paint and paint the walls in you office green.

  4. turn the lights out when you leave and make sure the janitorial staff does also - i'm amazed at the office lights in my town burning at 2am on a friday night!  computers turn off as well!

make sure the maintenance staff suports your green efforst as energy efficiency should be part of their daily routine.

recycle everything you can, from soda cans to paper. better yet use less of both to begin with since recycling does not make the plantet greener than does decreasing the production of glass, metal and paper products.  some offices recycle water through a series of fountains or constructed marshes, but this is a lot more intense than a lot of offices can handle and your proximity to a natural water source may make this a problem.

think before you make purchases.  try to locate local suppliers of eco-friendly products.  watch out for products shipped from half way around the world and items with a lot of unnecessary packaging that may look nice but ads to real value to the product it contains.

check into refurbising your building to add insulation and take advantage of daytime, natural lighting.  this means bigger windows with blinds.  windows that open are better than those that don;t for helping to regulate energy consumption.

plant trees for shading and as a windbreak on the north side of your building.

research into either solar panels on the roof or a rooftop garden.  there may be tax breaks for solar powering and a rooftop garden does a lot to insulate a building plus reduce stormwater runoff that probably ends up going from your roof & parking lot into the nearby harbor.

if you're really intense about it, check out the book 'cradle to cradle' by william mcdonough & michael braungart.    it offers a lot of design ideas and introduces people to the concept of eco-effectiveness.

    good luck!
