  1. The Melbourne Cup is a horse race that stops this nation and is a celebration unique to Australia.

It's one of the world's richest horse races and takes place on the first Tuesday in November every year. Workers in Melbourne get a public holiday and throughout the rest of Australia, virtually every workplace has a Melbourne Cup lunch and work stops to watch the race. Hotels everywhere have Melbourne Cup luncheons, ladies dress up with fancy hats and during the race, a fair proportion of cars even pull to the side of the road so the drivers can listen to the race undisturbed. People who barely know what a horse is and never gamble at any other time, study the form, pick horses with a pin or because they like their colours or their name and place bets, often for large amounts. It's a crazy time, but soooo Australian!

Australia Day on the 26th January is another special occasion. We all have a holiday, buildings are decked out with Australian flags and Australia Day celebrations are arranged in most towns. At these we have traditional Australian sports such as thong (flip flop sandals) throwing, cowpat throwing, cockroach, canetoad or lizard races and competitive beer drinking often followed by a fireworks display.

  2. Anzac Day - Ex servicemen/women and most other people attend a Dawn service and in some towns they have parade ,then its off to the local pub to play 2up (this is the only day this is legal)

Australia Day 26th Jan as this is summer most of us get together with friends and family for a BBQ

Queens Birthday weekend ,June ,usually a fireworks display somewhere

Labour Day weekends just an excuse for a public holiday

Christmas in July- because Christmas Day is usually stinking hot as it is in the middle of summer we don't have a Hot dinner with all of the trimmings we usually have prawns ,cold ham, cold turkey and salads ,so in July when the weather is suitable most of us take the opportunity to have a Full Christmas Lunch with all the trimmings and a Fire etc.

  3. well we have several:

    Anzac Day

    Rememberance Day

    Queens Birthday Long Weekend

and special occations are very odd, but they are still special:

Depending on which state you are from the NRL and AFL grand final days are HUGE!

i think that is all i can remember, that are significant anyway

  4. Anzac day is probably our best as it pays tribute to our serving, served and fallen soldiers. We dont really have set customs but BBQing and day out at the sports and getting together with friends is what we do best.
