  1. Wear a PFD and have fun. A PFD is a life jacket

  2. Make sure that you wear your life jacket. The Laser is a good fast boat, but may tip over quickly. Knowing how to swim is a good idea. Take a safe boating course. Take a sailing course.

  3. Contact the Coast Guard.

They will tell you what safe boating is all about, or will refer you to someone who can help.

They do not want you to be unsafe, so I'm sure that they'll give you sound advice.

  4. Don't look directly into the BEAM !!!  (LOL)

  5. Mrs. Bean,

I have notice that you have asked a few questions about a Laser.  Either you are looking at buying one or have already done so.  Whatever the case, the first  three rules of boating is to think safe, act safe, and to be safe.

Before you put the boat in the water, rig everything up in your yard and go over the boat, lines, hardware, sails, mast, boom, foils and check for damage.  Repair/replace whatever needs attention.  The first thing you need to learn how to do on a Laser is how to right it and get back into it.  Learn this first with your feet able to touch bottom and then learn it with your feet off of the bottom.

Believe me, you are going to get the boat on it's side and you are going to get wet.

If you are asking about what stuff you need to have with you while sailing, then you need to look at the Coast Guards website and check your local laws.

  6. Make sure the bung is in the back before you launch.

Make sure the rudder is on the boat before you launch.

Make sure the cunningham line is rigged and tied off: That way the mast can't fall out when you turn upside down.

Make sure the daggerboard is tied in, so you can't lose it.
