  1. sometimes it is sensory integration/sensory processing disorder combined with other things like central auditory processing disorder/apraxia/expressive receptive language disorder, etc..

  2. There is no definitive test for autism, so that may be why the doctor said he wasn't 100% sure.  He may be a late bloomer, developmentally delayed, or shy.  However, a doctor typically won't give the diagnosis on a whim.  Autism doesn't mean a person won't live a happy life, it affects people in a wide range of ways.

  3. At a very young age, it can be very difficult to diagnose children with autism. Most of the time, the label is developmental delay until they are old enough that you can do proper tests. Some of the kids who start out as "developmental delay" will end up with a diagnosis of autism, mental retardation, fetal alcohol syndrome or effects, a mild learning disability, hearing impairment, or something else.

The proper diagnosis at an early age would be a bigger deal if the early interventions for all of those weren't so similar, for the most part.

I have a friend whose first grade teacher thought he was retarded. At least part of that was because he was left-handed, and his old-school, foreign-born mother made him write with his right hand. He ended up being...a vice-principal!

  4. There are several diseases that have similar  characteristics of Autism. Some of them are ADD/ADHD, bi-polar,and schizophrenia.  Autism has a wide range of disorders involved in it which is called the spectrum.  In other words there is severe autistic to Aspergers which is very mild.  For me my son is Autistic and his exact diagnosis involves ADHD and the Bipolar with unspecified severity and Autism.

  5. Rhett's syndrome
