My 14 year old son seems to not have any interests, at all. He is not into sports although he is athletic. Any ideas, especially, non-athletic, maybe unconventional... thanks

  1. Arts/Crafts

    models of cars or planes

    cooking or baking

small construction projects- there are kits available for kids his age to build things like bird houses and such

Drawing or painting or modeling clay

Stained glass art projects or glass etching

There are tons and tons of things he could do.

Does he like little kids?  Maybe he could babysit and earn money?

  2. Here are a few ideas:

    Martial arts

    skateboarding

    electric guitar/drums

    drama club

    photography

computer graphics - photoshop will keep him busy for HOURS!

These are some life skills he needs anyway, but you can make them FUN:

    cooking/baking

learning simple home repairs or carpentry, landscaping

laundry (ok, this one's not fun, but it helps you out and gives him something to do)

  3. video games, take him out for some fun go karting has always been a fav

  4. what does he like or watch

ask him about what he likes and talk about them

  5. 1.  His homework

    2.  TV

He should take a musical instrument course at school;  learning to play trombone or some other brass instrument.  It's fun, and in high school you get to march in parades.

  6. If he has maybe a more creative or expressive side, some boys really like theater, dance, art, or writing...which are not necessarily the first thought of activities because when someone thinks "14 year old boy" they think football. A lot of times, even if these things don't tend to be the solution for a bored boy, they are self-explorative enough to maybe help him find what he is interested in. Dance is actually a man's art.

Also, maybe he's not into competitive athletics...but hiking is always a nice thing or maybe get him into some cooking classes.

  7. My son was the same way. No interests at all!  One year for Christmas I bought him an acoustic guitar from K Mart.  He said he would probably never play it, but now, 2 yrs. later, he has taught himself to play, and he's awesome.  He has purchased an electric guitar, and a bass guitar, and plays all of them very well.  Only down side - he's always in his room or in the basement playing guitar, I never see him!!  My point is, just provide him some materials to encourage him;  paint, pastels, crossword puzzels, a good book, sketch pads, etc.

  8. Maybe paintballing.  I have friends that are not into conventional sports but are very competitive into paintballing.  That way it is active, and he's not just sitting at home playing video games.  It does cost a few bucks to get started, but I think if you are looking for something unconventional he would totally like it.

  9. You have to get your son motivated somehow, but don't push or nag. That's an automatic turnoff for kids. Perhaps he would like to enroll in Karate classes, bowling classes, baseball, football, tennis lessons, roller blade hockey, wood carving, etc. A fourteen year old should be able to find plenty around the house to keep him motivated & busy, such as mowing the lawn, emptying the trash, & other chores around the house. etc. Has he ever gone fishing? Perhaps he'd enjoy that. I raised three sons & they were always busy doing something. Does he have a father/father figure in his life? If so, that would help. Male bonding is important at  that age.

  10. try lax

  11. Unconventional Athletic Idea:

I myself did not like team sports but I do enjoy being athletic and staying fit. Something I got into a few years ago was boxing. Most local gyms will offer a class and are open to kids much younger than your son. It is something that is very individual, builds confidence, allows for excersise, and is non-contact while they are in "training". The physical change I encountered was incredible, and I am sure building a little bit of muscle and strength for a 14-year old boy would be somewhat exciting. The best thing is that  it was always fun (punching bags, doing pad work, speed bags..etc.).

    Non-Athletic ideas:

    Go Carting

    Acting for local theater

Maybe a class at community college or youth center (film making, drawing, cartooning,) anything that he has expressed a smidgen of interest in can be expanded in a community college class!

    Hope this helps
