I know that colleges like to see community service and they want well-rounded people. But what are some different community service options? EVERYONE volunteers at the library, hospital, or animal shelter. Are there are other ways for me to volunteer and get community service hours in a new and different way of volunteering that would impress colleges?

I will give best answer to the person who completely answers my question and gives me good suggestions of volunteering at new and different places. Thanks!!!

  1. depends on what your majoring in i would think . if it involves children then perhaps volunteer at camp, school, if adult then the sr center, theres town work too , painting fences, parking lines,  try to find something in your chosen field , my son (nursing field) volunteered as a paitent helper for our  dr.s office - he helped the elderly to and from their cars, helped write in answers to all the papers that new patients need to answer, kept the kids occupied with stories and games.

  2. it doesnt matter that EVERYONE volunteers at the library, hospital, etc., what matters is that how will YOU be a different volunteer from all the rest how will you stick out in their mind as a volunteer and how can your services will be different to make the world a better place

no matter where you volunteer, do something new take that initiative and do something that will allow that person to remember you forever

you definitely need to keep a log of what you do and get it signed by the person that you are assisting NOT your parents

i volunteer at the hospital and they've never had a volunteer like me and the reasons...consistency, persistency, my ability to establish a close relationships with the staff, and my determination

its all a matter of what can you do that is different from any other volunteer that has done that same job

if you want something out there though you can fundraise money and send it to the WWF, the nature conservancy, and the green alliance since its about the environment nowadays

choose something that makes you happy because when youre happy doing something it shows and thats when youre determined to make things better

to tell you the truth colleges look for someone who does something he/she enjoys and it benefits the greater good

you need to keep a log of your hours and document it with when? where? how long? along with a signature of who you were helping NOT a signature by your parents

  3. easyest is simply being g a candy girl at a local hospital

  4. Food and clothing banks. Before all those donations can be given away or, in the case of some clothes, sold to support give aways, they have to be sorted.

If you can organize things, you could offer your services to groups that have may have well-meaning workers/volunteers, but not ones who can think "Big Picture."

People who listen are always welcome at nursing homes and at blood drives or busy blood donation centers. If first-timers and "hearts in the right place" weenies keep talking (about something besides the outflow), they do better.

Colleges like dedication. If you adopt a family (elderly person/couple, single parent, family with chronic illness) in your church, neighborhood, or whatever and help them with chores, time, etc. that would be impressive.

  5. check out local senior center, also American Cancer Society has a volunteer like for folks who need to go to chemo but have no one to take them, they need rides, maybe help getting in and out of car. Nothing wrong with helping at hospital, folks need water to drink you can bring it to them, and learn about all the health care jobs that are done in hospitals to help the patients. AARP has a volunteer program helping old folks file their taxes, if you're good at following written directions you could help with that. Some counties have a program where youth does easy home repairs for elders who can't afford to have the work done, check with your county.  Tutoring kids in reading is good if you're thinking of maybe becoming a teacher.

  6. Go to your local chamber of commerce and speak to them about volunteer opportunities or committees you can serve on.  Putting Chamber of Commerce volunteer on your college app really looks impressive since the COC is the leading agency in your community taking care of business!
