I'm writing a paper, what are some disadvantages of electric cars? Also where does most of the electricity to our outlets come from?

  1. hazardous waste disposal and replacement cost.

  2. Big, heavy, expensive batteries that must be recharged often and eventually must be replaced, at high cost.

  3. Limited range

    Heavy batteries

    Time consuming to recharge

Transfers points of pollution ( an electric vehicle itself may be easy on the environment but what about the where the electricity comes from?  If it is sourced from burning coal for example, the pollution is still produced to power the electric vehicle, it is just released elsewhere ).

I agree with most of the comments previously made...perhaps an advantage that may outweigh some of those disadvantages is that electric cars have the capability of doing V2G: vehicle to grid.  If the power is down or demand is very high, a EV with charge in it, can put it back into the grid.  If the energy was captured from a clean sources (ie. solar, wind, etc.), I would think that this would outweigh so many of the disadvantages.

  6. Presently, it's the range. It simply isn't convenient for any thing but very short commutes.

The manufacturing entails many toxic materials and heavy metals - so there is both a manufacturing and a disposal concern with the environment.

The high current needed to propel the vehicle is a very real hazard for rescue workers and first responders to an accident scene.

The vehicles are only pollution free if the electricity source is pollution free.

They're necessarily built as light and small as possible - and that's no match for an SUV or even a conventional vehicle in a collision.

There is much research ongoing presently, and a new generation of battery as well as other new technologies may solve some of these concerns.
