  1. Look up epidemiology under equines.  Also try equine communicable diseases, infectious diseases, and pathogenic organisms affecting horses and humans.

  2. there is a version of streptococcus (C & E I believe) that can be carried between horses and humans.

  3. No, If you read all the way down the link Debi gives YES humans can get EEE, but not DIRECTLY from their horse.  they can get it from misquitos who have gotton blood from infected birds.    If you are looking for something directly from the horse Ringworm is possible but that is the only one I know of.  will do a little searching now.

  4. Ringworm, certain enteritis types, and never forget RABIES.  Horses get it, and can give it to humans.  A bite is not necessary; there are other paths of transmission.

  5. Only possible things I can think of are ringworm or staph.

  6. There are several diseases which fit into this category. All of the equine encephalitis infections are transmissable from horses to people, as are rabies, West Nile Virus, and some of the skin infections, such as sarcoptic mange and ringworm. Contrary to what other people on here have said, humans CANNOT GET STRANGLES from a horse- the bug which causes human strep throat, and Streptococcus Equi, which causes strangles, ARE related, yes, BUT THEY ARE NOT THE SAME. However, with that said, keep in mind that people CAN be carriers of Strep Equi and pass it from horse to horse on their skin or clothing. They will not get sick with it- S. Equi doesn't affect people- but they can make horses which are not infected sick.

EEE stands for Eastern Equine Encephalitis, which is perhaps the most contagious form of sleeping sickness around. Infected horses can pass the disease to people- which is why it's important to vaccinate horses against this infection. There are two other forms of the infection- the Western version, or WEE, and the Venezuelan version, or VEE. All of these infections produce similar symptoms. The horse has a fever ( often very high) is weak and lethargic, and in the later stages of the infections, is prone to staggering, seizures, and in some cases, paralysis. Most horses which contract encephalitis usually die from it or are euthanized- there is no cure. All the forms of this disease are contagious to people, but EEE is by far the most common- and the most dangerous. People who have this disease can transmit and spread it to others, which is why they end up being isolated or put into quarantine if they are found to be infected.

You cannot get worms from kissing your horse- that's an old wives' tale. If that were true, I'd have been dead a long time ago- I have kissed horses I have owned on the nose many times in my life, and I actually taught my first horse to kiss me on the cheek. It's not dangerous.

I hope this helps you with your project.

  7. Ring worm is a fungus and a human can pass to another human after getting it from a horse.

University Of Illinois Champaign did a study last year involving mrsa type infections try their website.

Strangles is distemper in horses and I have never heard to tranference to humans.

I have suffered upper respiratory infections while treating horses for them, but since I never got the mucosa stained (mine or the horses) or tested to see what virus or bacteria caused it, I can't say if I gave it to them, they gave it to me or if it was just chance.

I would say talk to a number of vets  try http://www.evetclinic.com  Dr Dan is a really nice guy and is very well read.  Tell him Cindy with the ponies sent you from here

  8. Stangles .... it is a type of Strept which can be passed from horse to human .....

We had strangles run our barn last year and my vet told my to becareful of my then 2 year old .... she was running in and out of the stalls .... not real common but possible ... and if I noticed a fever to take her to the Dr.

  9. WORMS

Humans can get intestinal worms from kissing their horse - shareing food with their horse or simply not washing their hands.

    These can kill you.

Make sure the horses you work with are on a good deworming routine.

Strangles can be carried BY people externally from one horse to another, but will not affect a human.

Most equine diseases are species specific.

  10. ringworm is the only one I can think of right now.

    Edit>

    EEE

Eastern, Western and Venezuelan equine viral encephalomyelitis (EEE, WEE and VEE respectively)

    I didn't know that one.

Edit> The first answerer (which has now been deleted) put "EEE", questioner asked what it was, I thought it was just a trolll so I Googled it and posted what I found.

How the $%&* do I get a &*%^ing thumbs down for THAT ????
