  1. thats odd very unusual

  2. Many big brands such as Nike, Coca Cola, etc. are heavily involved in sports sponsors.

With the Beijing Olympics on right now we're all getting significant sports marketing exposure.

Areas of responsibility:  advertising (television advertising costs for the Superbowl are historically the highest prices per second in the world), venue signage (inside and outside), high profile athlete endorsements, licensed merchandise, event management, PR, media coordination, etc.  If you're looking for a position that connects with athletes, you need excellent communication skills and the ability to deal with high-maintenance individuals (not all but a number of the best athletes have the ego to go with the excellence).  An interest in sports is of course useful

Some colleges/universities have developed courses/programs specializing in sports marketing.

(Not-so-new) emerging technologies are related to video streaming, the web, particularly the social sites such as Facebook, Myspace, etc.
