What are some eating options if you travel a lot?

My parents work for the airlines and so I'm traveling a lot... I'm wondering if it will hassle them and be a problem if I'm veggie. What would be good, healthy, maybe fast food things I could eat on trips without meat?

  1. Salads, hold the meat. Or order burgers without meat, they make for a tasty grilled cheese. Alot of fast food places are starting to offer healthy alternatives to french fries, such as apples, carrots and mac n cheese. Just make a meal out of several small options.

  2. There are always salads/salad bars.

As far as fast food is concerned:

McDonald's:  Avoid like the plague--even their fries aren't veg.

Wendy's: Ask for a veggie sandwich--request they put cucumbers on it :o)    Baked potatoes--either the regular sour cream & chive (if you're not vegan) or the broccoli and cheese

Taco bell--seven layer burrito, or bean burrito, or ask for a taco with beans subbed in for the meat--there are occasionally other vegetarian choices (their beans are vegetarian), so ask what is or can be made vegetarian (you can sub beans for meat on most anything)

burger king--they have a veggie burger

subway--veggie delight, some subways also have a veggie patty

dairy queen--our local dq has a veggie quesadilla

chain family restaurants--a lot of them have veggie burgers on the menu, or veg* pasta dishes,  barring that you can order side dishes or appetizers that are veg*

    pizza:  cheese or veggie pizzas

pasta:  usually have lots of choices

Indian/Chinese/Mexican/etc.:  MOST ethnic restaurants have or can make a variety of different vegetarian dishes

It might be a good idea to get in the habit of packing protein bars, nuts & seeds, and some primal strips so if you can't find something you at least have something to snack on until you can get someplace better.

Also, in advance go to happycow.net or vegdining.com to research the places you are going in advance to find local veg* and veg* friendly places.

  3. just tried something - i put veggie restaurants with name of city - i used L.A. - in search bar-got a whole bunch of choices.  i am guessing if you know where you are headed you could do the same.  And invite your folks to dine with you cuz it would be an adventure in family dinning & good for their "Heart Health" to eat less meat!

  4. I would pack most of it if you can.  Some ideas are chopped fruits and veggies, protein bars (you can get a great selection at a health food store) and nuts (excellent source of fats and proteins).  Also, you can buy milk or dairy products at almost any fast food place.  It's not a hassle, but if you can show that you are responsible by planning ahead and bringing food, that will impress your parents.

  5. Some good bring-along foods are nuts, already cooked rice and beans, fruit (as long as you aren't going to a different country), Clif bars, Organic Food Bars, Odwalla bars, seeds, dried fruit like raisins or prunes, Nature's path bars, peanut butter sandwich, spinach tortilla with hummus and cucumbers inside, carrots, celery with peanut butter (I've seen individual to-go packs of peanut butter at a grocery store), almond butter sandwich, apple sauce, pita chips, pretzels (I like salt-free), and granola.
