What are some effective ways of using reverse psychology?

If you told people please don't answer this question, a bunch of people would probably answer it.

With my step-daughter:  When we want her to try something that is important for her development (reading, riding a bike, etc.)  that she is showing a little fear about or is reluctant to try, we say I bet you can't do that -  you're a little too young or you're not quite strong enough - she immediately tries it.
