What are some effective ways to get rid of lice?

My daughter came home from the sitter's with lice, and now I have them, too? We've tried mayonnaise, Nix, and the nit comb, and we still have them! How can I get rid of them for good? Does hair dye work? And does using a hair dryer kill the nits? Help! School starts on Monday and she won't be able to go if she still has lice!

  1. tie a plastic bag tight around her head and make it air-tight and have her sleep the night like that..so the buggys suffocate.

  2. Go to the drug store and get a shampoo that gets rid of them. It usually comes with a comb. Use this shampoo and then go outside and start at the scalp and you have to comb them out. The nits like to stay at the scalp and they wrap the eggs really close. So get as much as you can, and then shower and use the shampoo AGAIN. Clean EVERYTHING in your house- sheets, pillows, clothes, vacuum the coaches and carpet, then spray the coaches and everything with some stuff. You probably want to repeat this twice to make sure. I've never had them, but my mom did a while back. Hope this helped!

  3. shave her head and get a new sitter!

  4. Hi bn_imes,

Here is an e book I found online that cures head lice naturally

    http://xrl.us/HeadLiceRemedy

    Good luck

  5. there are a number of treatments with different types of insecticides, like permethrin, or benzene benzoate.  You should also treat anyone else in your home and pets.  Treat bedding, chairs, car, couch, etc.

  6. you might have to cut her hair for the time being.

please don't send her to school all "licey" - spare a thought for the other kids in school too.

  7. bn imes,

Hair dye does not work.  the hair dryer process might work but is a two week process and should not be used with nay of the pesticide treatments as they are minimized by heat.

You say you used NIX and mayo and they both failed.  Not a huge surprise to me as we were there too.  You also said you used the nit comb but did not mention if it was a high quality one or the cheapo ones that you get at the drugstore or with the shampoo.  Most of these are too cheap to get all of the nits out.

We found a great comb made by a company called NitFree and they also have a chemical free mousse that helps you get the nits out of the hair by dissolving the glue that is holding them onto the hair shaft.

I would recommend that you look at what they have to offer.

They have US and Canadian sites.

    Good luck.

And you have lots of laundry to do!!!

  8. OK I looked for this question because I want to tell you the answer! I have fought head lice a few times because my Mom's boyfriend has 5 kids who always give it to my kids. It's horrible! Lice shampoo doesn't work. Nothing works. Except this. OK wash your hair in hot water, blow dry it on high heat and then straighten every piece of it pay close attention to the nape of the neck and right above the ears. This is the only way I could get rid of them forever. Heat kills them! Everything else is a waste of money. Also I've heard they hate tea tree oil so I use the shampoo and Conditioner. Good luck!=)
