in my understanding (which could be anywhere from slightly to completely off) the "american dream" is really whatever you consider to be the most perfect, pure, gratifying way of living (in the OPINIONS of most AMERICANS...)

it's pretty much cliche western culture... i feel like there are several things that can be considered the american dream... but to mush all of those cliches and ideas into one, the ideal american:

comes from a financially unstable background (in this or another country) and decides to start over again "american style" by moving to new york.  they get a job performing manual labor for minimum wage (washing dishes, factory work etc.) and puts in enough effort to work their way up the ladder and eventually either start their own business and/or move to the suburbs where they marry and have TV-like traditional family of 4 and find a brick house with a bright green lawn and white picket fence which houses the golden retriever they adopt shortly thereafter from the pound.

...kind of weird way to explain it but thats what i always think of

i dont mean to be rude but usually ppl say american dream for the general goals they have in life or u could be talking about the movie
