  1. Run an awareness campaign for reduced electricity use.  Put up signs, notices in the bulletin, and get teachers to help.  Switching off lights, air conditioners / heaters, computers and anything else that can afford to be off will save heaps of energy in the long run.

This also addresses the basic problem we are facing globally, which is too great a consumption of electricity.  The electricity is mostly generated in coal fired power stations that respond to greater electricity need by burning more coal.  Therefore the less we use, the less coal is burned and the less greenhouse gases we are emitting.

This is also a sustainable long term project because it requires little ongoing effort from you.  If signs are in place near light switches, doors, air conditioners and so on to remind users to turn them off, and students and staff have regular reminders to save electricity it will eventually become automatic for people to do these things.

  2. Have an environmental awareness science fair where students come up with ideas to help the environment and construct models or displays to explain their theories, it's one way to be sure nobody builds a volcanoe ;)

  3. your school can hold a can drive...its a good way to get money and be ecofriendly

a garden that everyone helps to plant

  4. my school is considered an "ecoschool" and here are some of the things we do...

we are not allowed to put posters up throughout the school, because that is a waste of paper.

our school cafeteria uses biodegradable packaging and cutlery.

we have air dryers instead of paper towels in the washrooms.

we aren't allowed to turn lights on in classrooms if it is sunny and there is natural lighting.

    etc.

  5. Start an ewaste program at your school "electronic waste". Find someone who's willing to accept and recycle all types of ewaste : Cd's, DVDs, discs, wires, batteries, computers, printers, etc. All of that stuff can be collected and recycled. Include teachers, students, their families and the community. Your school can be a drop off point.

Also, consider turning all the leftover cafeteria fruit and vegetable scraps into compost. Stuff like lettuce and tomatoes and apple cores would make some awesome compost. Instead of all that stuff being pitched in a landfill, you could make great garden soil!

Also, every student should lead by example and conserve and recycle at home, too.  Set up recycling programs at home, just like you are in school. Sounds simple, but I bet a lot of your classmates and their families don't recycle at home :( .

Have they considered collecting rain water? Yeah, rain water can be collected from the gutter system and put in holding tanks to use on the lawn, the trees and other plants. They can be simple and small, or large and complex. But they are a great use of rain water.

    Best wishes to you!
