I have a digital SLR that I am going to bring, but I'm not sure if I should bring my external flash and extra lens (75-300mm). I'm worried my stuff will get stolen... I suppose I could buy locks for my bags though. And I hear it's good to have bug spray when you go to China because of the bugs.

  1. I have been in China for about the last month and heres what i would bring if i were you.

    1.  Purell,  washing you hands with the sink can get you sick so usually you want to use purell even after you wash, also most restaurants don't use paper towels so this is better anyway.

    2.  Mosquito repellant

    3.  I brough protein powder.  Its in individual packets and mixes well inside of a bottle of water.  THis has been great when it's difficult to find food and you just need sustenance.

    4.  Learn a few words of Chinese and they will be much more gracious.  Learning someones language is a sign of respect so.......

    5.  I didn't bring my DSLR but i did bring a point a shoot.  I also hide my iphone because i once brought it out and drew a crowd at an airport.

    6.  Bring really light comfy clothes because it is soo humid here.

    7.  Power adapters!  you have to watch out it seems every place uses a different type of prong and you can **** up your batteries if you aren't using the correct voltage adapter.

    8.  Peptobismal and whatever other indigestion medication you like.  Be careful here, no ice, brush teeth with bottled water...etc....

I suppose thats it.  I love it here.  Its another world but everyone has been extremely friendly....

  6. Just make sure that you have comfortable clothes and walkable shoes. Definately bug spray. Most importantly deodorant.

  7. The usual stuff - clothes (it's going to be hot!), boots, a money belt, camera, Passport, don't forget you need a visa, Mobile? (unlocked so you can get a Chinese SIM), Do you speak Chinese? (If not I would definitely learn the basics, at least buy a pinyin phrase book), plug converters?

    A few tips -

take half as many clothes, and twice as much money...

Don't use DEET bug spray!! It's horrible and carcinogenic. Use Avon Skin-so-soft DRY OIL BODY SPRAY (and if your really serious mix it 50-50 with methanol), works much better. They do make a bug repellant but it's basically the same as skin so soft, but over twice the price.

EDIT: (btw. if you order off avonshop.co.uk, use the code BIRTHDAY08 - for a 10% discount and free delivery, you can complain for £2.25 a bottle with free delivery!!)

Take something to do - maybe a book to read or a Nintendo DS or something - you will probably spend many hours waiting in airports, on busses/trains etc...
