  2. * When T. Ray tells Lily her late mother (whom she at first idealizes) abandoned her when she was very small, it foreshadows Lily finding out

    that her mother did, in fact, make the mistake of leaving her behind after suffering a nervous breakdown and running away from her unhappy marriage.

    * When August tells Lily about April's suicide, it foreshadows May's suicide.

    * When August tells Lily that she doesn't have to go home to T. Ray; that August, June, and all the other Daughters of Mary love Lily; and

    that Lily's faith in the Virgin Mary will help her get through the tough times in her life; it foreshadows that, in the end, when T. Ray tries to take Lily home, she will stand her ground and refuse to go back with him, the Daughters will protect her, and T. Ray will eventually back down.
