What are some examples of how materialism is hurtful?

I am writing an essay and need some examples. Warfare examples would be nice.

Materialism depends on reliance on natural resources. That's the main function of war in capitalism.

In war, innocent civilians (like your mom/children) get killed.

Materialism isn't bad. When done in excess such as greed, promotion of such ignorance leads to decline in humanity, which in itself causes society to self-destruct.

any overly large vehicle, like a hummer, is hurting all of us as the price of fuel escalates.
