  1. A typical American basically-cares more about how things look and being a success in life than they do being close to their parents and family, being happy etc.

Confusing money and power and success with being happy.

  2. Example: Paris Hilton. Basically cares only about material object (things that she can buy with her daddy's money) and cares not at all about fellow human beings, love, compassion, etc.

A materialistic person basically lives their life around inanimate objects, from fashion to decorations.

  3. Materialistic means placing on the highest value on your possessions and wanting more and more. It is a vicious cycle that never stops.

  5. Buying a house to make a profit on rather than buying it to raise a family in.

  6. someone who puts more value into acquiring things rather than doing good

so if you have a number of cars houses jewellery clothes

a surplus to your needs then you are materialistic

  7. Being materialist put simply is loving objects more than people.

A person caring more about an expensive vase than their two year old child. The child has feelings the vase on the other hand is just an object that can be replaced unlike the child.

  8. Some one who is materialistic puts more value in what they can get or own before anything else.  They see that the more they have makes them a better person. they compete against the high dollar lawn mower their neighbor just bought or the nice SUV that they have to be better then their neighbor.  or who ever.   they put something that is material above all else, that is their personal value in life.   not the spirit, not the person, not love, not anything that is not solid.

most are selfish when it comes to giving up anything to another just because.  they would not give the shirt off their back to help you out if you needed it. .

  9. Driving a 4x4 in London.

  10. Our whole society is an example of materialism. Everybody wants, has, needs, uses and lives for materialistic things. The computer you and I are writing on is materialistic, as is the TV we watch and the house you live in.

Let me ask you this. Diamonds are one of the most valuable things on this planet, but think about it, why is that? They are not much use at all are they. Sure, sometimes they are used to cut up other things, but what else. Nothing, there is no other use for a diamond exept to 'look nice' around somebodys neck or finger.

That's materialism. We put so much value on something that is basically pretty useless.
