So what are some examples of music/bands challenging the norms and values of society? i.e. of what people accept? what are some of the biggest changes done by music?

  1. Jazz was seen as unwholesome music in some circles back in the day - they discussed sexuality in a time when people didn't talk about s*x without turning red.

    Did you see the movie, "Ray"?  Ray Charles was seen as unwholesome in his early career.

    By discussing s*x on the radio waves, perhaps it helped pave the way for the later Sexual Revolution.

    Perhaps it went too far, however - a lot of rap music discusses the fleshy aspects of s*x - stripped of the love and other emotional content. p**n is ubiquitous now.


  2. Rock is probably the God here. Its challenged the Establishment. and it Came up really as that challenge. My fav example is Pink Floyd and their song "Another Brick in the Wall" is the Best Ever Song in this regard.

    You should also look at Bob Marley's music as something very real and original and something concrete by way of challenging the whats-there-is-there syndrome in society.
