What are some examples of "norms"?

An assignment I received in my sociology class today is to break 10 norms in public and write about how people reacted. But I'm not sure what it's meant by norms. I think I have an idea, but I want to make sure I'm on the right path.

-What are norms?

-And what are some examples of norms?

thanks!

  1. Being quiet in the elevator. Standing in line. Waiting your turn.

  2. General societal expectations. Though not illegal to break the norms, the norms are generally understood and it makes people uncomfortable when others don't follow the norms. They're the types of things parents instill in their kids when they're toddlers.  To break some norms - walk down a crowded stairway on the left side instead of the right. When in an elevator, put your back against the door so that you're making eye contact with the people in the elevator. Wear a sandal on one foot and a boot on another - or wear pajamas in public. Go to a fast food place and sit (uninvited) at someone else's table to eat. Sing or talk to yourself in a crowded area. Stare at strangers for extended periods of time. When coming up with ideas, think about the way small children act in public as they haven't nternalzed all of the norms yet. (however, you may not want to throw yourself on the floor and scream and cry).

  3. A "norm" is basically a socially accepted rule.  Think of things your mother told you:  Don't chew with your mouth open; don't stare; don't pick your nose; don't spit on the floor, etc., etc.  Just make sure you break little, minor ones like these, not the major ones that have also become laws, like, "Don't kill your neighbor."  If you break that one, I'm disowning you!
