What are some examples of species besides the polar bear directly affected by the melting of polar ice?

I assume there are species besides the famous penguin, polar bear and seals. Is the change in sea environment drastically reducing cold water fish stocks already? The relatively few species that can be affected, compared to the rainforest, would make it even more important critically (the percentage of an ecosystem's species that vanish).

  1. Eskimos - hey, that's us

  2. It's the ice on land that will cause most of the rise in ocean levels. Floating ice may be a wash, although, there is thermal expansion of oceans to consider.

As the ice on Greenland melts, our oceans sea level rises. If the entire ice mass would melt, the oceans would rise 20 feet. Fortunately, that might take 100 years.

However, a rise of the ocean of just a few feet will literally flood some low-lying countries out of existence. Some are very poor countries. There will be mass exoduses and starvation. Vacation homes on the shores of Florida will also disappear. The everglades will no longer be fresh water and the entire ecosystem will be destroyed as the fresh water marches turn to salt water.

Added to the problem is the fact that global warming will cause ocean currents to change, ocean storms will be more violent, climates will change causing massive crop failures.

Critics are correct. Global warming is a natural phenomenon, and our atmosphere has turned to a sulfurous poisonous gas a few times in the past 650 million years because of it. However, research scientists agree that human kind is accelerating the current crisis in global warming/climate change. Over 90% of species on earth have been eliminated during each of these events.

  3. homo sapien

  4. It changes the salinity levels of the ocean which many creatures and ecosystems will be vulnerable to.

  5. moose, wolves
