What are some exercises to get more flexible?

My toe-touches and hurkies are horrible.

I have a compition coming up and have to do both.

  1. Stretch every day. when stretching you want to stretch the muscle just to the point where it feels a bit uncomfortable but not to where it hurts, then hold that position for 10 to 30 seconds and breathe deeply imagining your breath entering that muscle and relaxing it. Do not bounce, this can damage the muscle. Once you have spent several seconds in a given stretch, gently release the stretch. Stretching all of your major muscles every day is great for long term , flexibility, injury prevention and blood circulation.

  3. Stretches.  Here are a bunch of good books on the subject:

    Here's s trick:  Go into a stretch until you hit its max range, then holding it there, feel your muscles relax into going a bit further--but don't strain and push it too far, don't overdo.  This will enable you to get the most out of each stretch exercise.
