  1. Hurricanes have a very low pressure at the centre of the storm. The centre is a calm, rainless area called the 'eye'.Torrential rain with violent squalls with thunderstorm occur in the area around the eye which is called the 'eye wall'.Winds blow in an anticlockwise direction in the northern hemisphere within the storm. The seas associated with the storm experience mountainous waves around the eye. They initially move in a North-westerly direction  and recurve sometimes to a north-easterly direction in the northern hemisphere. While entering the land they produce storm surges(abnormal rise of sea level)and flood the coastal regions causing heavy damage to life and property.

  2. Hurricanes often have convective available potential energy (CAPE) values as high as 5000 to 6000 joules per kilogram (or j/kg). That is as strong as the severest thunderstorms or the most powerful supercells.

Hurricanes are measured using the Samfir-Simpson scale. From this scale, a hurricane is given a category number which depicts the intensity of the hurricane. For instance, category 1 means a hurricane with at least 74 mph winds going up to about 85 or 95. A category 5 hurricane is the worst type of hurricane you can experience. Hurricanes like this can have the same destruction as a EF4 tornado, mainly because of the destructive winds, which can reach 155 mph or more.

Hurricanes can be sheared off by anticyclone winds or trade winds that shear off some of its convective characteristics.

Hurricanes that hit the United States usually start off as a circulation of low pressure containing small convective storms from the east side of Africa, going along the equator westward to the Carribean, and hitting the warm waters; hence, what was small storms increase in strength  increase in strength as it tracks northwestward into the Gulf and then into some area of the United States.
