What are some free online course material for grades 8/9.

My state does not have Connections Academy or the Florida online school.

I am currently sick and very contagious so I don’t want to get library books and make other people sick. I will be contagious for a while and want to keep up with my home schooling. I will just do the online course and only get supplemental books when I get feeling better. It has to be free and I need:

Science or Chemistry

Sociology or History

Literature/Reading (High school Level reading)

Beginning Spanish

And I would like but don’t need:

Pre algebra

Grammar

Writing

I would really like it to have lessons and quizzes/worksheets already planned, but that is not absolutely necessary, just the information will be fine.

Thank You

  1. You may find the Chemistry course (Apologia Homeroom) at VHSG helpful. We are a full semester in to the course for the live, online classroom version. This being the case, jumping in to the live class would not be a good idea. However, in preparation for the course to go assynchronous next semester, the lectures have been archived as VoiceThreads. To access these lectures, go to http://www.virtualhomeschoolgroup.com/ and select the Chemistry course from the science section of the course listing. Sign in for the class as a guest or register as a student at the sign in screen. You will find a master list for the lecture VoiceThreads (recorded lectures) just a bit below the 'Meet the Teacher" video. We have lectures listed up to module 10 with more on the way (I am recording module 11 today as a matterof fact). Just drop back in for an update when you get to module 11 and up to get the links for the last few modules. Both the live, online version and the assynchronous version of the course are free.

One thing that I would mention since I see pre-algebra listed in your wanted courses, you will need a fairly good grasp of basic algebra for Apologia chemistry. You will do a fair amount of vaiable juggling. If your algebra is very weak, you will find yourself in over your head pretty quickly. If you are not sure if you have the basics of what you need, you are welcome to take the link to my online classroom. The link is listed in each module in the Apologia Chemistry Homeroom (see "Online Classroom Lectures (1:30pm central; Tue, Wed, Thu)". I will be in there over the next several days developing course material. I can check your algebra level to see if you have what you need to begin the course.

  2. http://www.free-ed.net/

  3. Washoe County has a free Online Charter School that you do at home. They even provide you with a computer and all of your software and materials.

  4. chem4kids.com

    hippocampus.org

    a to z home's cool

    brainpop

    discoveryschool

    scholastic.com

There are so many free things out there for homeschoolers. Just type in something like "free chemistry for kids" and you'll have more websites than you'd ever use.
