What are some fun, and effective drills for 3rd grade girls volleyball?

I am a first time coach, with first time players, in the 3rd grade. I want them to have fun at practice while learning. The basic bumping and serving drills are good, but mundane for this age group. They have short attention spans and love to goof off. I am looking for some fun drills that will allow them to enjoy what they are learning, while still furthering their skills. Since this is the very beginning for all these girls, I want them to learn to love the sport, and want to continue. Let me know if you have ANY ideas. Thanks! :)

  1. Have them get into a circle, and bump, and set the ball to each other, have them count the number of times they can do it without the ball flling. Give the winning team a prize. Please vote mine a best answer, it is good!

  2. We did a drill the other night.  We had a player toss the ball across the net and the player at the front of the line had to catch the ball.  Not just a normal catch, but a catch that looked like a forearm pass.  Their arms had to be extended full when they caught the ball.  They had to move their feet.

    Another drill to help movement is the one we had a player toss the ball across the net.  They still had to catch the ball, but with their knees.  That teaches them to move to the ball but not use their hands.

  3. 1> Lower the net and watch them spike;

    2> Shrink the boundary so that they have a smaller court;

    3> Hot Potato (catch the ball and pass / set... in two actions);

    4> Each team can only serve twice, if you start a rally, so that everyone can get involved in all actions.

    These are part of what we do in USYVL.

  4. I'm helping to coach a fourth grade team, and today was our first practice. We let them do a serving relay; there were two teams and everyone on each team had to serve the ball over and in...first team to get everyone wins. A good drill to get them to move is "Between the legs." Three players go on one side of the net; the rest of the team serves. The three players have to run and get the ball to bounce between their legs. They switch with the servers after they get three balls to bounce between their legs. The players like this because it doesn't seem like volleyball...even though it is.

  5. *Queen of the Court...it's playing volleyball, but it's constant movement.

    *Dead Fish/Battleship...serving game.

         -split the group in half. have them serve one at a time. if they make it over, they sit/lay on the other side where it landed. if they don't make it over, they get back in line. if someone serves the ball and it hits someone (or they catch it) then the person that got hit gets back into line. the team that gets all their players on the other side wins!

  6. Sink the ship is a very fun game for serving.

    What you do is have one person lay down on the other side of the net, and all the other gilrs have a volleyball. The stand wherever you want them to, and they serve. if they make it over the net adn in, they serve agian. if they hit the person, them adn the person get to serve. if you miss it, they go lie down. when all people are lying down, you've sunk the ship! i find it very effective for me, adn its fun.
