What are some fun things to do for a family to do around cancun in Mexico?

Where you will be staying, you will be on the Mayan Riveria, which is about 40-50 miles from Cancun.There's alot to do in that area. I highly recommend visiting a number of places close by. Take the city bus, its ALOT cheaper and quite safe. Ask at the resort for times and bus stop. The resort will have excursions to many of the places to see, but everything is so close so it's easier and cheaper to take the bus. I believe all of the following  places I have recommended are about 20-30 mins away at the most.

Xel-ha. It's an ecological park. They have an all inclusive package which includes snorkeling gear and meals. They have a river that flows into the ocean to snorkel or tube down. Bikes are available to ride as well as walking trails. They even have a hammock area to rest.

Tulum, Mayan ruins. It was once a religious city. I recommend getting a guide. The view is incredible, it rests on a cliff. Below you can go swimming on the beach.

Playa de Carmen is not far either. Its a small touristy town. Nice shopping and great restaurants. I believe you can rent bikes and mopeds there too.

From Playa de Carmen, take the ferry to Cozumel. They have the best snorkeling. Make sure to try the Ice Cream there, Just ask one of the locals for directions to the ice cream shop.

Another location which is unknown by many tourist is Puerto Morelos. It's a small fishing village.  The beach is quiet and secluded. They have kayaks and other water gear for rent. That's the place to go if you want the beach to yourself.

As for Cancun, the beach is great. It's a very touristy place, very Americanized so I rarely stay there. I wouldn't be able to tell you what to do there besides the beach and Xcaret, another water park for snorkeling.

I prefer staying on the Mayan Riveria rather in Cancun. Alot more culture and not quite so touristy. Have fun.

Seeing the Mayan ruins at Chechinecha is very cool.  Other than that you should stay on your resort.  Mexico can be kind of risky.
