One activity many avoid in Nanaimo is swimming. Sometimes the wind has blown some warm surface water close to the island but a lot of the time the water close to Nanaimo is nasty cold.

At the right time of year you can get into the bathtub races, motorized or hand power, propelling the bathtub from Nanaimo to Vancouver's English Bay. Not for the faint of heart by hand.

One can sometimes go on hunts for cougars, but note, in the Nanaimo region cougars do not wear lipstick.
