I wanted to know things to do with water if you don't have a pool and you're at home. Besides playing in the hose or sprinkler. Ways to keep cool. Any ideas? Thanks!

  1. Drink iced tea on the deck, have a water baloon fight on the lawn, buy a kiddie pool for your feet.

  2. Go to the beach, that is, if you live close enough to it.

Go climb a hill, if you live closer to one.

Get to the forest, or a clump of trees,  on top of the mountains high up way out there.

Take your feet into the closet trail and hike,  or your bicycle and cycle through  places you have never been before.

Do some gardening, get your hands dirty, listen to the earths constant murmurs, its heartbeat, its life.

Know your place in the universe,  stick your nose into the lives of the other living creatures in the planet, watch howthey, like you toilf for their daily food.  respect them.

Give thanks. Appreciate your family and spend time with them.  These are the coolest things to do.

  3. Hi, it depends on the age of your child ... but starting from very little:

    - a baby which can sit up will appreciate being placed on a binliner which has got water on it, just to be able to splash around. Not much water needed, a couple of cups is plenty.

    - kids will enjoy having a 'fill the bucket' competition. You place a couple of buckets at opposite ends of the garden, fill one with water, give each child a beaker (small plastic cup) and they have to fill it with water from the full bucket and run to pour it into the other bucket. You can either have a mark on the bucket as the winning line, or have a timed competition, see who can get most water in the destination bucket within the given time.

    - waterpistols! You can make your own out of an old squeegy bottle, fill up and either target people or objects placed on walls or containers.

    - water seesaw. You will need two plastic containers, a bucket of water, a round log or similar and a plank of wood (or tray from the kitchen). Try to balance the containers on either end of the plank with the log underneath at the middle, like a seesaw. Then add a little water to one container, then the other, to create a seesaw action. For added fun, add faces and names to the containers. You might want to use some bluetack to keep the containers on the seesaw, but it is just as much fun watching them slide off and splash everywhere!

    - bucket balancing act. A simple fun one for an hot afternoon. Get a small bucket, half-fill it with water, then try balancing it on your head! If you can manage it standing still, try walking around with the bucket on your head or adding more and more water until it all falls down and you get drenched - tip using a bandana or teacloth tied into a ring on top of your head makes this much easier!

    - for the really inventive kids, try to design and build a water trap. You will need a tree with an overhaning branch or a swing frame or similar, some string, a bucket and some form of weight. Get the kids trying to work out how to arrange the bucket so that if someone disturbs the string, the entire content is emptied on to their heads!

Hope that has given you a few ideas!
