My son who is struggling in math who's now advanceing to the 4th grade has an IEP. In my view he is operating at 1st grade level in math. He basically can't add or subtract. His teacher told me she have used manipulatives and everything else just as i do at home. She stated to me that he is always daydreaming(i don't know if this would have anything to do with him learning math, but I thought I would just throw it out there .Maybe somebody knows) I have come to the conclusion maybe he will get it one day when he's ready, and at the same time every year he has to attend summer school. He always question me why does he have to go to summer school every year, and the answer is because he is not passing the CRCT test here in georgia. What can I do to also try and advance him up?Again we have tried manipulative and just about anything you can name. I do notice while in my care he is not interested at all in learning, he tends to look around nad maybe its because he does not understand.

  1. I raised 2 children who were physically disabled, along with learning disabilities.  I found that some subjects required more one on one approaches so that they could go at their own pace and not feel like they were way behind their classmates.  When children feel lost in a subject, they cope by day dreaming, as they are not comprehending the instruction, therefore become bored....daydream.  You can request an aid to help him with his math separate from his class, with his own curriculum and goals to meet, he very well may catch up if a different approach is presented to him.  By the way, both of my kids ended up graduating with their class, and given a standing ovation out of respect from their class mates.  Anything is possible as long as you help him believe in himself by believing in him.....remember, we are all individuals, no carbon copies, and sometimes the carbon copy method that public schools teach by just don't work!  Best of luck to you and your family.

  2. I'm in GA also. Hope your not in my county, they are horrible with special ed! So is the rest of the USA.

Anyway, What does his IEP state that the school is suppose to do to help him? Are they doing it?

What needs to be done now is the IEP plan needs to be changed to something that WILL help him.

Go to this great message board for ideas on how to help him

Talk to the people at this site, they are very good. When you do and you know what needs to be done to help him, make a list of these things.

Then, write and request an IEP meeting.  You can request one at any time. In the meeting, give everyone a copy of your list and ask specifically for each of these things.

If they refuse anything, write 'refuse' beside what it is. Later, write to district sped director requesting 'prior written notice' on the refusals.

This is VERY important for parents, because schools are to have LEGAL reasons for their refusals. If they don't, they might change their mind and do what you ask for when you ask for the prior written notice because they won't put illegal reasons in writing.

Write to me if you would like to!

  3. how are his other subjects, does he daydream in them...  if it only relates to math try using money to let him buy things at stores, there are also websites starfall.com  brainquest.com and hundreds of free internet game resources that might help
